(via movieoftheweek)
as we say in cinema studies, any use of a mirror in a film is semiotic paydirt.  this one is no different, containing perhaps the most loaded sign in human history, amplified as it is by being tattooed on flesh, compounding its historic reference.  contextually, derek is reflecting (unavoidable pun) on his past life of hatred, and the entire semiotic system is rendered by the image’s stark, naked composition (slight downward angle, his ‘real’ self in soft focus in the foreground while the reflection, his old self, is in sharp focus).  but above all, this image is just really, really sad.  aesthetically and historically, it weeps.
